Join Hands on Art, a Creative Lab for Children!
WE ARE CRAZY ABOUT LEARNING AND SERIOUS ABOUT FUN!
“Please bear with us while we get the learning part out, we promise it is worth the read!” From the beginning of our creation, the purpose of mankind has been to create, that process of creating encompasses important skills that support healthy development in individuals. Throughout time the process of creating art had been restrained, limited and eliminated from school curriculums, leaving individuals without the healthy exposure to that important tool that fosters ingenuity, mind-heart connection, confidence and creative thinking.
With the constant stimulation of technology and social media, children and adults are bombarded with an excess of information and overstimulation, preventing us from developing mechanisms to filter and balance the intake of that much information. Though we are not scientists, a simple example can demonstrate the impact of the noise effect of digital stimulation, by exposing yourself for at least 30 min. to one hour of social media, scrolling (only intake, not typing) or the same time on video game exposure, followed immediately by laying on your back, with closed eyes, try to bring your thought to a blank piece of paper, holding that view in your mind for at least 20 seconds, you will feel the static noise in your brain and the effort to bring your mind to that blank stage might take at least 10 minutes.
Many studies have discovered that the internet, social media, and video games produce the same addictive chemicals and the constant exposure also modifies brain mass and function. Then we wonder, how did we waste our whole day on social media? or why our kids aren’t focused, hyperactive or have other emotional conflicts?
The process of creating is a cognitive process when we create we are using different areas of our brain, combined with our body we are organically searching for answers while we use our hands to execute the visual result. Our breathing becomes consistent and our brain intuition increases. We produce the right amount of positive brain chemistry like Serotonin, Endorphins, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine; these natural chemicals help with the proper functioning of our body system and especially the senses of joy and happiness.
HANDS ON ART’S UNIQUE TEACHING APPROACH
YES, WE ARE MORE THAN AN ART PROGRAM, WE REALLY CARE FOR YOUR KIDS!
After much research Hands on Art has created a program that focuses on important skills to support children in their development and to build future successful individuals. Throughout the process of creating, kids get the opportunity to problem-solve, feel comfortable taking risks and understanding the importance of making mistakes as a catalyst for learning, while they learn artistic skills, and how to properly use materials and exercise creativity. In our new program our focus is to prepare students to get in charge of their own process of creating and we, the instructors, are there to demonstrate, facilitate and emphasize their discovery. Each class focuses on a specific skill according to age level and individual needs.
Now we offer two options of classes for beginner levels, ages 6-9 (based on the timespan of a class.) A 60 minutes class will better suit students who are in the process of developing their attention span and focus, while a 90 minutes class will introduce students to our New Methods of Peer/Self-Assessment. We use the extended time to develop leadership skills in communication, observation, independence, critical thinking and problem solving through Peer/Self-Assessment techniques and we establish individual standards of quality and planning before executing each project. This new process will allow students to become independent and more intentional with their process of creating while developing a great foundation for confidence, and creativity while having FUN! If you would like to learn more, please call the studio and set a time with Iraima Otteson, the Art Program creator!
